The Penryn and Falmouth Welcome Refugee Families group formed in April 2018, inspired by a collective wish to help some of the people whose lives have been devastated by the ongoing civil war and conflict in Syria.

Our aim is to welcome a small number of refugee families here, so that they can rebuild their lives in this area. Penryn, Falmouth and the surrounding areas are very well suited, being both large enough to be well served by public transport, keeping people easily connected to other areas in the UK, and to have a great range of educational facilities from playgroups to universities, while being small enough to have a warm familiar community who will gather around to support these families.

We are one of the groups applying nationally to the government under their full community sponsorship scheme. This scheme was set up in 2016 to help community groups take on the role of supporting and resettling refugees in the UK.

Since 2011, at least 5.6 million people have been forced to flee from Syria, to escape a devastating civil war. Projects like this one have been set up to welcome families who have been forced from their homes as a result of the Syrian conflict into communities across the UK. The schemes have been shown to be the most effective ways of helping families adapt as quickly as possible to their new surroundings to become valued members of their communities.

We estimate that it will cost a minimum of £10,000 to help resettle a family. We have raised money through events, Crowdfunder and regular donations and now have enough in the bank to resettle a family.

Money raised will go towards:

  • a rent top up for housing
  • paying for interpreters
  • providing English lessons
  • helping to give the family everything they need to become independent, integrated members of our community.
